NTU’s sports teams are off to a strong start at the ongoing Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic Games, scoring four championships so far, with the women’s basketball team winning the title for the third consecutive year.

The women’s basketball team beat Singapore Institute of Management (SIM), 67-44, at Ngee Ann Polytechnic on 25 Jan.

NTU also emerged as champion in women’s volleyball, men’s floorball, and men’s table tennis.

The women’s volleyball team defeated SIM, 3-1, on 22 Jan. Team captain Chew Jia Hui, 20, said they were determined to improve from their performance last season, when they were kicked out of the competition early.

“This time, we had better communication with one another and with our coach,” Chew, a Year 2 student from the School of Art, Design and Media, said. “We also came up with a more structured and intensive training, and improved our discipline.”

The men’s floorball team also ended a two-year gold medal drought and dethroned defending champion Temasek Polytechnic, 5-2, on 27 Jan.

Team captain Glendon Phua, 26, said the team focused more on enjoying the game rather than winning the title.

“There was one period when we were down 1-0, but we weren’t very affected,” Phua a first-year postgraduate student at the National Institute of Education, said. “We just focused on enjoying the game.”

The men’s table tennis team also beat Singapore Polytechnic, 3-1, on 22 Jan. Doubles player Leonard Leong, 25, said that it was teamwork that set the team apart from their opponents.

“We went in without expectations, and thankfully it turned out well,” the Year 4 Renaissance Engineering Programme student said. “It’s just a matter of form and luck, but for us I think it was teamwork that pulled us through.”

The IVP Games started on 9 Jan and will go on until 1 Feb.
