Talking Point – Finding Your First Job?
Two career fairs took place on campus over the past two weeks, but many final-year students have started their job search as early as August last year. Some have even signed contracts with the big multinational corporations.
But even as some bemoan the heated competition for popular jobs in areas like banking, certain growing sectors are still actively looking for fresh recruits.
This year’s NTU Career Fair featured names that are much more at home in Orchard Road: Abercrombie & Fitch and Uniqlo. And as more global retail giants like H&M expand their local operations, more opportunities will open up and extend beyond its service base.
The power and energy sector, too, is aggressively looking for new hires. Singapore is building its fourth LNG tank on Jurong Island, and is set to come head to head in the near future with Johor’s Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex.
With all these developments in place, how do you see your own career prospects? Would you go off the beaten path for the less popular options?
How should one go about looking for a fulfilling first job in today’s market?
