Caught On Campus – Till Late Last Friday Night, Halls Cheer On
By Nicole Lim
With the inaugural Inter-Hall Cheerleading Competition just around the corner, the usually quiet and peaceful lobby of the School of Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS) takes on a completely different façade by night, as various halls’ cheer teams – usually from nearby Halls 1, 3, and 5 congregate for arduous practice.
There is friendly rivalry in the air, admitted MinZhen Loh, a year 2 student of the School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences and Hall 1’s cheer head, who makes it a point to come early to secure enough space for her team.
Still, by the end of the night, the teams would combine their mats so that they can take turns to practise their whole routines from start to end.
MinZhen said that juggling school and the intense practice is tiring, but her passion for cheer goes beyond the pursuit of victory.
She feels that everyone should give cheer a try, just as she herself did a year ago when she joined her hall’s cheering team with no prior experience.
“It’s so exciting. I love that feeling of being in the air. It’s very different from anything else I’ve ever done.”
