NTU men’s handball team overcame hosts NUS 29-19 to win the NUS Handball Invitational on 10 March.

It was a welcome victory after consecutive second-placed finishes the past two years. The annual competition saw teams like Singapore Polytechnic and Singapore Management University competing this year.

“We trained and fought hard to earn the title this year. I felt that the victory was deserved as we really showed the spirit of champions,” said men’s captain Edel Sng, a third-year student from the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

The women’s team ended their season as runner-up, after falling to NUS in a tightly-contested final.

Down seven points in the last 20 minutes of the match, the women fought to narrow the gap, but eventually lost 13-14.

“It was really close but I’m happy enough to say that the team played well,” said women’s captain Anna Tan, 22. “Even though we didn’t win the championship, it was still a great experience.”

The third-year Nanyang Business School student added: “We will continue to train hard and play like we have nothing to lose.”

For the men, keeping their feet firmly on the ground will be important after the win, said captain Sng.

Adding that the team will be gunning for gold at the 2016 Singapore University Games tournament in September, the 23-year-old added: “We will continue to train even harder as a team and definitely do what it takes to protect our IVP title.”
